Charles Lutz’s Modern Made Leisure installation at Fallingwater offers a striking commentary on the fluidity of value—both cultural and monetary. Through his meticulously crafted sculptures in stainless steel and bronze, Lutz reimagines glassware once sold in Kaufmann’s Department Store, whose sales helped fund the iconic building of Fallingwater itself. The transformation of these everyday objects into sculptural forms challenges the viewer to reconsider the shifting perceptions of value over time. What was once considered utilitarian, a mere consumer item, is now elevated to a work of art, prompting reflection on how cultural and monetary values are not fixed but subject to context and interpretation. Lutz’s sculptures symbolize this transference of worth—capturing the way in which objects, institutions, and histories can exchange roles and meanings across time, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of commerce, culture, and art.
